Organic Pest Control

Keep your edible balcony garden pest-free using safe, natural methods that protect both plants and people.

Prevention First

Healthy plants resist pests better than stressed ones. Good airflow, proper watering, and regular inspection are your first line of defense on a balcony where chemical sprays may affect neighbors and living space.

Aphids & Whiteflies

Spray affected leaves with a strong jet of water to dislodge pests. For persistent infestations, apply insecticidal soap or neem oil in the evening. Introduce ladybugs if available — they are natural aphid predators.

Slugs & Snails

Elevate pots on saucers or feet to reduce access. Hand-pick at dusk when they are active. Crushed eggshells or diatomaceous earth around pot rims create a barrier slugs avoid crossing.

Caterpillars & Hornworms

Inspect tomato and brassica leaves weekly for holes and droppings. Remove caterpillars by hand. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is an organic bacterium safe for edible crops that targets caterpillars specifically.

Companion Planting for Pest Defense

  • Marigolds: Repel nematodes and some flying insects
  • Basil: Deters flies and mosquitoes near tomatoes
  • Nasturtiums: Trap crop — aphids prefer them over vegetables
  • Garlic & chives: Strong scent confuses many pests
