Seasonal Planting

Plant the right crops at the right time to maximize your balcony harvest year-round.

Timing Is Everything

Balcony microclimates can differ from ground-level gardens — they may warm up faster in spring but cool down quicker in fall. Track your local frost dates and adjust planting schedules accordingly.

🌸 Spring

  • • Lettuce, spinach, arugula
  • • Radishes and peas
  • • Cool-weather herbs (parsley, chives)
  • • Start tomato seeds indoors

☀️ Summer

  • • Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants
  • • Basil and warm-season herbs
  • • Bush beans and cucumbers
  • • Succession-plant lettuce in shade

🍂 Fall

  • • Broccoli, kale, Swiss chard
  • • Carrots and beets
  • • Garlic (plant cloves in containers)
  • • Cover tender plants before frost

❄️ Winter

  • • Microgreens and sprouts indoors
  • • Hardy greens with row covers
  • • Move herbs inside near a window
  • • Plan next season's crop rotation
